A second-half brace from Hannes Wolf helped New York City FC rescue a point with a 2-2 draw against Nashville SC at GEODIS Park this afternoon. Keaton Parks assisted both of Wolf’s goals, while Sam Surridge scored both goals in the first half for Nashville SC.
Here are three observations from New York City’s late comeback.
Slow start for New York City’s attack
Despite holding most of the possession in the early portion of the match, New York City struggled to turn that into chances with no shots in the opening 20 minutes. It was a stark contrast from Nashville, who generated eight shots during that stretch to apply early pressure on the New York City back line.
New York City’s best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute, when Alonso Martinez got on the end of a long ball from Birk Risa - only to be thwarted one-on-one by Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis.
Surridge strikes twice
The dam finally broke in the 27th minute. Matthew Corcoran got the ball in the midfield and delivered a long ball into the box to find Hany Mukhtar, who then laid it off to set up the first goal from Surridge.
In the 41st minute, Surridge struck again. This time, the chance was set up by Alex Muyl, who gathered the ball on the right endline before squaring it for Surridge to double Nashville’s lead. For the first time in 10 matches, New York City went into the halftime break trailing by multiple goals.
New York City fights back with late push
After generating just two shots on goal through the opening 45 minutes of play, New York City began to show signs of life in the final third after the halftime break. It started with a goal in the 54th minute, when a combination move from Maxi Moralez to Keaton Parks in the penalty area set up Wolf to score from close range.
Wolf’s goal marked a turning point in the match, as New York City would generate seven shots in the remaining 35 minutes in a late push to equalize. Those efforts finally paid off in the 87th minute, when a glancing header from Keaton Parks set up a point-blank equalizer for Wolf to flick into the back of the net.
“Overall, I’m very pleased with [Wolf’s] performance,” head coach Pascal Jansen said. “Given the fact [of] what happened at halftime, going into the second half we needed a better performance - and Hannes was one of the guys who stepped up.”
