Thanks to a late equalizer, New York City FC came away with a road point in a 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. Talles Magno had the goal for NYCFC, while Carles Gil scored for New England.

The finishing struggles continued in the first half for New York City, as despite five shots in the

first half, they went into the halftime locker room with no shots on goal. They had a couple of opportunities to get one as the half went on - including a sharp angle try from Gabriel Segal that missed in the 26th minute.

As for New England, their best chance of the half came in the 30th minute, when Goustavo Bou missed high on a free kick from the edge of the penalty area.

“I thought in the first half we dictated the game, but we just didn't put the ball where the space was, which was on the sides to get 2v1 or get crosses enough,” head coach Nick Cushing said. “ [In the] second half we started to do it, but we could have done it more, [and] the fact that we dictated the game I think is a real positive for our team moving forward.”

The first shot on goal finally came for New York City in the 51st minute, when Braian Cufre teed up a line drive shot from about 30 yards out from goal - but it was stopped by Petrovic.

It looked as though New England drew first blood in the 61st minute, when a cross from Dylan Borrero was deflected off the head of Matias Illenic and into the back of the net for an own goal. Ismael Elfath reversed the call, as Bou was screening Barraza’s vision while in an offside position.

New England finally broke the deadlock for real in the 70th minute, when Bobby Wood set up Carles Gil with a through ball, and Gil finished past Barraza to make it a 1-0 game with just over 20 minutes to play.

NYCFC looked to answer quickly - and nearly did in the 75th minute, when a cross from Santi Rodriguez was redirected on goal by Thiago Martins - but it missed just wide to the left.

New York City got their equalizer in the 80th minute. Off a corner from the right side, Gabriel Pereira sent in a cross that was powered home by Talles Magno to beat Petrovic.

“I thought Magno was exceptional,” Cushing said. “I thought it was a real individual performance from him in the sense of how he dictated the game and really dictated our attack.”

With the draw behind them, New York City FC now return to the Bronx next Saturday, hosting Atlanta United at Yankee Stadium at 7:30 PM. It’ll kick off a three game home stand, which will include the club’s first stop in Queens of 2023.
