QUEENS, N.Y. - New York City FC’s winless streak now stands at four matches after a 1-1 draw against Atlanta United at Citi Field. New York City took the lead in the 43rd minute off of a penalty kick from Santi Rodriguez, but Atlanta United responded with a header from Jamal Thiare in the 65th minute.

Here are three observations from the match.

Prolific chance creation

New York City were able to create chances early and often against Atlanta United, generating a season-high 23 shots in the match. 11 of those shots came in the first half, which included the go-ahead penalty kick from Rodriguez.

The chance creation began from the opening whistle, as New York City generated five shots within the first 25 minutes.

Those shots created a season-high 2.4 expected goals for New York City - with 1.6 of those coming outside of the penalty goal. Nearly half of that value came from Rodriguez and Bakrar, who combined for 1.33 expected goals on 11 shots.

Finishing struggles continue

While New York City FC went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead, it came at the end of a half in which the only shot on goal came from the penalty kick goal. On the positive side, New York City had a prolific first half in terms of chance creation, with 11 shots on 1.6 expected goals.

Six of those 23 shots came from Bakrar, with none of them being on goal. Through the first seven matches of the season, Bakrar has a total of 3.1 expected goals on 23 total shots (nine shots on goal) with no goals to his name.

Chances allowed

On the defensive end, New York City were not able to limit Atlanta United’s opportunities despite the absence of striker Giorgos Giakoumakis. Atlanta United recorded an expected goal value of 3.5 on a total of 19 shots, with six of those shots being on target. The goal ultimately came form the counterattack, as Edwin Mosquera got the ball in space on the right side before finding a running Thiare on the back post for the equalizer.
