Winless streak prolonged after 0-0 draw with New England
By Chris Tsakonas
New York City FC have their first point in three matches after a scoreless draw against the New England Revolution in front of 22,203 supporters this afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
We did more than enough to win a football game today, but their goalkeeper was excellent,” head coach Nick Cushing said after the match. “If we play that match 10 times, we win it more times than we draw.”
The first half saw NYCFC create several early chances, including a glancing header from Keaton Parks that missed the target from five yards out in the 13th minute. A chaotic sequence followed in the 22nd minute: first, a Luis Barraza giveaway led to a breakaway chance for Bobby Wood, but Barraza recovered to make the save. Seconds later, Gabi Pereira forced Djordje Petrovic into a diving stop in one of the best chances of the match.
Richy Ledezma had another great chance in the 35th minute, when he fired a powerful shot from the edge of the area that narrowly rattled off the woodwork.
The best chance of the match came in the 61st minute, when Rodriguez sprung Pereira free on a crafty through ball in the box - only for Petrovic to come up with another save.
New York City went down a man late, as Braian Cufre was sent off in the third minute of second half stoppage time after stepping on DeJuan Jones’ foot. The red card will be another blow for City next week, as Cufre would be out with a suspension.
NYCFC created plenty of chances, finishing with 1.5 expected goals on 17 total shots. Pereira had the most involvement in the attack, taking six shots and getting involved in most of the dangerous chances created throughout the match.
“We're not in the position we want to be in and we haven't got as many points as we would like, so there's real frustration,” Cushing said. “I see everybody doubling down and working harder.”
The draw extends NYCFC’s winless streak to seven matches in league competition, and eight matches across all competitions - the club’s longest winless streak since the start of the 2019 season. New York City will have a chance to break the streak next Saturday, when they face Real Salt Lake on the road.
“What you see is a team that is really fighting together, and that fills me with so much confidence that this will turn and we will we will start picking up three points,” Cushing said.
