NEW YORK – New York City FC closed out a four-match home stand with a 1-1 draw against St. Louis City SC. Hannes Wolf opened up the scoring in the 51st minute for the Pigeons, while Brendan McSorley equalized in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time.
Here are three observations from tonight’s match.
Pigeons threaten early and often
As has often been the case this season, New York City opened the match by creating several early chances off of counter attacks.
In the 3rd minute, a quick build up into the final third led to a long-range effort for Keaton Parks, who fired a shot over the crossbar for New York City’s first shot of the game.
The Pigeons nearly converted on another counter-attack in the 18th minute, as a long ball over the top led to a close-range effort from Nico Fernandez Mercau that was blocked by Rafael Santos.
New York City had six of the first eight chances inside the opening 22 minutes – but none of them found the back of the net.
Wolf and Moralez engineer break through
In the 51st minute, the Pigeons broke through. Moralez collected the ball about 30 yards out from goal before playing a through ball into the right side of the area for Hannes Wolf. Wolf had enough space to get off the shot, and he beat Roman Burki to score the go-ahead goal for New York City.
It was Moralez’s fifth assist and Wolf’s second goal of the year.
Stoppage-time crusher
After taking the lead early in the second half, New York City mostly held St. Louis City at bay while occasionally threatening to double the lead.
The match flipped completely in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time. Lukas MacNaughton had enough space on the left side to get off a cross into the middle, and he was able to find Brendan McSorley for a free header to equalize in the final seconds of the match.
It was the latest goal New York City has conceded all season.
