New York City FC fell closer to the playoff cutoff line tonight after falling 1-0 to the New York Red Bulls in the final Hudson River Derby of 2026. Julian Hall scored the decisive goal for the Red Bulls in the 57th minute.
Here are 3 observations from New York City’s defeat tonight.
New York City fails to capitalize on possession
From the opening whistle, New York City controlled much of the ball and the run of play – but struggled to turn that into consistent, quality scoring chances. The Pigeons’ best chance came in the 18th minute, when Andres Perea one-timed a powerful strike from the edge of the box to force Ethan Horvath into a save.
New York City generated a total of six shots by the halftime whistle, but they only added up to a total of 0.23 expected goals.
Miscue at the back costs New York City
For the first 56 minutes of the match, the Red Bulls weren’t much of a threat in the final third. The Red Bulls didn’t have a single shot on goal in the first half, and mostly settled for disrupting New York City’s possession whenever possible with their classic press.
In the 57th minute, the Red Bulls finally had a chance to break through. James Sands played a slow back pass to goalkeeper Matt Freese at the edge of the area, but Julian Hall anticipated it quickly and took it away. Hall dribbled around Freese with ease and slotted it into the back of the net to put the Red Bulls ahead.
The goal came against the run of play, and it ultimately decided the match.
Missed opportunities keep New York City off the scoresheet
In the minutes leading up to Hall’s goal, the Pigeons had two high-quality chances in quick succession to open the scoring.
In the 51st minute, a misplayed clearance by Tim Parker fell to New York City, and Agustin Ojeda cut it back for Hannes Wolf for a one-time shot that was stopped by Horvath. Seconds later, Nico Fernandez Mercau played a ball across the box that fell to Luighi at the edge of the six – but he pulled the shot wide of the right post.
New York City had a few chances to equalize after conceding the opener, but the best chance came in the first minute of second-half stoppage time. A mishit clearance from Matthew Dos Santos fell to Benie Traore five yards out, and his one-time shot was denied by Horvath again.
New York City finished with 18 shots and 2.2 expected goals tonight, but ended up with nothing to show for it.

New York City will head to the Deep South to face Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sept. 26. Atlanta United has struggled this year, currently sitting at 14th place in the Eastern Conference ahead of a road match against the Portland Timbers tomorrow night.
